Prevention strategies

Preventing violence against women requires a comprehensive, community-wide approach that addresses root causes and changes social norms. Prevention is everyone's responsibility.

The Public Health Approach to Prevention

Effective prevention operates at multiple levels:

  • Individual level - Building skills and knowledge
  • Relationship level - Promoting healthy relationships
  • Community level - Changing social norms and environments
  • Societal level - Addressing systemic inequalities and policies

Primary Prevention Strategies

Stopping violence before it starts:

Education and Awareness

  • School-based programs teaching healthy relationships, consent, and respect
  • Bystander intervention training - empowering people to safely intervene
  • Media literacy to challenge harmful gender stereotypes
  • Public awareness campaigns that shift social norms
  • Age-appropriate education starting in elementary school

Promoting Healthy Relationships

  • Teaching communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Modeling respectful, equitable relationships
  • Addressing toxic masculinity and rigid gender roles
  • Promoting emotional intelligence and empathy
  • Encouraging help-seeking behavior

Addressing Risk Factors

  • Reducing childhood exposure to violence
  • Addressing substance abuse
  • Promoting economic opportunity and stability
  • Reducing social isolation
  • Challenging attitudes that condone violence

Community-Level Prevention

  • Engage men and boys as allies in prevention efforts
  • Create safe public spaces with good lighting, visibility, and community presence
  • Support community organizations that promote gender equity
  • Implement workplace policies that support survivors and prevent harassment
  • Coordinate community response through multi-agency collaboration

Bystander Intervention

Everyone can play a role in preventing violence by learning to safely intervene:

The 5 D's of Bystander Intervention

  • Direct - Directly address the situation if safe to do so
  • Distract - Create a distraction to interrupt the situation
  • Delegate - Get help from someone with more authority
  • Delay - Check in with the person after the incident
  • Document - Record what's happening (if safe) to provide evidence

When to Intervene

  • Someone is being harassed or threatened
  • You witness controlling or possessive behavior
  • Someone appears uncomfortable or in distress
  • You hear sexist jokes or comments that normalize violence
  • A friend shares concerning behavior about their partner

Policy and Systems Change

  • Strengthen laws and enforcement around domestic violence and sexual assault
  • Ensure adequate funding for prevention programs and victim services
  • Implement evidence-based training for law enforcement and other professionals
  • Address economic inequality and lack of affordable housing
  • Promote paid family leave and workplace protections
  • Support comprehensive sex education in schools

Measuring Prevention Success

Effective prevention programs track:

  • Changes in attitudes and beliefs about violence
  • Increased bystander intervention
  • Improved relationship skills among participants
  • Reduced rates of violence over time
  • Increased help-seeking behavior
